Living / Family Room
Most Living Room or Family Rooms require an 8x10 or 8x11 Area Rug. This is done so that the furniture is placed partially on the Area Rug with no space between the Area Rug and furniture.
Dining Rooms
In Dining Rooms the preferable look is to have both the table and chairs on the Area Rug. As a rule of thumb the smallest size for a six chair table is 8x10 to 8x11. If the table seats eight chairs then the standard size begins at 9x12. The next sizes up are 10x13, 12x15, and 12x18. For mansion sizes, there are Area Rugs as large as 13x22+
Bedrooms
In bedrooms the Area Rug is typically placed horizontally about midway under the bed. For queen sized beds the smallest size is 8x10, for king sized beds the smallest size is 9x12.
